Northern States To Witness Heavy Rainfall As NiMet Releases Three-day Whether Forecast

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and moderate rains across several parts of the country between Friday and Sunday.

In its weather outlook released on Thursday in Abuja, the agency predicted thunderstorms with moderate rainfall in parts of Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kaduna States on Friday morning.

It added that thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over most parts of the northern region during the afternoon to evening hours.

Naija News reports that for the North-Central zone, NiMet projected light rains over Niger, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Plateau States on Friday morning.

The agency further stated that thunderstorms with moderate rains would be experienced in Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau and the FCT later in the day.

According to the outlook, the southern region will see cloudy skies with chances of light rains over Oyo, Enugu, Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Delta and Cross River States on Friday morning.

NiMet noted that light rains are also expected over Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Ebonyi and Anambra during the afternoon and evening hours.

On Saturday, thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over Sokoto, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe and Taraba States during the morning hours.

NiMet added that later in the day, parts of Borno, Kano, Jigawa, Kebbi and Taraba States would also experience thunderstorms and rainfall.

For the central region, light rains are expected in FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Benue and Kwara States in the morning, while southern states, including Enugu, Imo, Cross River and Akwa Ibom, will record light showers before widespread rains later in the day.

The agency predicted thunderstorms with moderate rains over Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano and Borno States on Sunday morning.

It added that Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno and Katsina would experience similar weather patterns in the afternoon and evening.

In the North-Central region, cloudy skies are expected with light rain in parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi and Benue States in the morning, while rainfall will spread to Niger, Kogi and Kwara States later in the day.

For the southern region, light rains are expected over Imo, Enugu, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo and Bayelsa States in the morning, extending to Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Cross River and Akwa Ibom later in the day.

The agency urged Nigerians to take precautionary measures against possible hazards.

It advised: “Avoid driving under heavy rain.”

“Farmers should refrain from applying fertilizer and pesticides right before the rain to prevent nutrient leaching.”

“Ensure warm clothing for vulnerable persons due to low night-time temperatures.”

“Fasten loose objects to prevent accidents, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees.”

Airline operators were also urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning.
